Newcastle-under-Lyme born wing half Dickie Smith joined Newcastle Town in 1911 and from there moved a year later to Crewe Alexandra, playing at Gresty Road until the First World War interrupted the domestic football programme. After the War he joined Second Division Stoke in 1919, making his Football League debut against Barnsley that August and being a first team regular for 3 seasons until losing his place in 1922 after playing 35 matches during their successful promotion campaign of 1921-22 which saw them promoted as runners up. However he only played one First Division match, at Oldham Athletic in August 1922, before finishing his professional football career after 2 goals in 110 appearances for The Potters.
