Description

Wath-on-Dearne, Rotherham, Yorkshire born inside forward Clem Smith played for South Kirkby Colliery in 1934 before joining Third Division (North) Halifax Town, making his Football League debut at Hartlepools United in August 1935. His two seasons at The Shay produced 12 goals in 57 appearances before he joined Chester in the 1937 close season. He had scored 4 times in 28 appearances when First Division Stoke City signed him in March 1938, and he appeared regularly for them through to the abandonment of peacetime football due to the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, which effectively ended Smith’s career after 9 goals in 28 top flight appearances for The Potters.
