Goalkeeper Bob Smith was a consistent member of the Ayr United team that won the Scottish Second Division Championship in 1936-37. It was said of him at the time “Coolness is Bob’s middle name, and his keeping is of the clean-cut, stylish kind. Rarely do you see him scrambling madly for a difficult shot. His positional sense has warned him where to make for, and he is able to take the ball, unhurried and unflurried.” In 1940 he appeared 15 times for Celtic in wartime fixtures.
