Description
Preston, Lancashire born goalkeeper Joe Sloane began his senior football career with hometown First Division club Preston North End where he was an amateur on their books after the First World War, without making their first eleven. Sloane played for Lancashire Combination club Morecambe in 1920 from where he was signed by newly elected Third Division (North) club Accrington Stanley, making his Football League debut at Chesterfield in October 1921, whereafter he established himself in Stanley’s first eleven, eventually losing his place to Peter Floyd in April 1922 after 26 matches. Floyd was Accrington’s first choice goalkeeper in 1922-23, restricting Sloane to 9 more appearances for Stanley, before he returned to Morecambe in the summer of 1923, his last recorded club.
