Selston, Nottinghamshire born goalkeeper Herbert Skermer started playing for Hartshay Colliery in 1918 before joining Norwich City, for whom he made his Football League debut in their inaugural League fixture at Plymouth Argyle in August 1920. He was ever present in 1920-21 but lost his place in March 1922 to Billy O’Hagan and he left Norwich for Kent League club Ramsgate at the end of the season after 73 appearances for The Canaries. He subsequently played for Coalville Swifts in 1923 and Loughborough Corinthians in 1924, his last recorded club.
