Sunderland born right back Billy Simpson began his football career with Wearside League club Selbourne in 1897 before joining First Division hometown club Sunderland, making his Football League debut at Stoke (as an inside forward) in March 1898, and making two further appearances for The Wearsiders, scoring in a 2-1 win at Bury a week after his debut. He remained with the club until the summer of 1902, when he moved to Second Division Lincoln City. He spent six seasons with Lincoln, becoming club captain and making 151 appearances for the Imps without ever scoring, playing his last game against Bradford City at the end of December 1907. Earlier he same year he was described as “one of the most efficient backs in the Second Division. Speedy, clever and kicks with good judgement.”
