Description

New Springs, Wigan, Lancashire born left back Jack Silcock started his professional career with Manchester United as an amateur in April 1916 after having played junior football for Aspull Juniors and then Atherton in 1915, He signed professional forms for United in September 1917, making his Football League debut at Derby County in August 1919.

Silcock won 3 caps for England between March 1921, making his debut at Ninian Park in a 0-0 draw with Wales and May 1923 when he went on the England tour to Sweden. He was also called up in May 1926 to the squad that went to Belgium and France but played in neither game (in the days before substitutes!). He also represented The Football League in 3 representative matches between March 1921 and March 1926.

After their relegation in 1922, he helped Manchester United to promotion as Second Division runners up in 1925, and was  part of their 1926 FA Cup semi final team that lost to local rivals Manchester City at Bramall Lane. A genuine stalwart for The Red Devils, he made his last of 449 appearances at Hull City in March 1934, scoring twice for the club over 15 seasons before leaving Old Trafford in the summer of 1934 for Oldham Athletic for whom he never appeared, joining non league Droylsden United later the same year, where he continued to play for a further two seasons.

NB it’s not easy to be exact on the opponent in this photograph, but our opinion is it’s a match against Port Vale in October 1922.
