Middlesbrough, Yorkshire born inside right Bernard Sharkey started his football career with Grangetown St Mary’s in 1919 before joining First Division club Preston North End in May 1920, making his Football League debut against Bolton Wanderers in February 1921 in a 2-1 home defeat, his only appearance for the Deepdale club before joining newly elected Third Division (North) club Barrow in June 1921. He played in Barrow’s inaugural Football League fixture in August 1921 against Stockport County and scored 14 goals in 37 appearances for The Cumbrians, being the club’s leading goalscorer in the 1921-22 season. He moved to Tranmere Rovers in July 1922 and scored 4 times in 23 appearances for the Prenton Park club, but the season end proved the end of his professional football career and his football career thereafter is uncertain.
