Ilkeston, Derbyshire born goalkeeper Walter Severn began his football career with Hucknall Portland in 1893 before he joined First Division Nottingham Forest in May 1894. He was understudy to Dan Allsopp and made his Football League debut against Preston North End in a 2-0 home defeat on 4th October 1894. He played again two days later as Forest beat Aston Villa 2-1, however these proved his only League appearances and he returned to Hucknall Portland in 1895. He joined Red Hill United in 1896, and played for Little Hallam Rangers in 1897 before joining Alfreton Town later the same year, with whom he ended his career.
