Chester born left back John Settle began his football career with hometown Cheshire County League club Chester after the First World War, from where he joined newly elected Third Division (North) club Wrexham in 1921, making his Football League debut at Darlington in October 1921. He made 23 appearances for The Dragons during the rest of the season but appeared only twice more during 1922-23 before joining Welsh National League club Bangor City in 1923. He returned to play for Chester in 1924 and subsequently played for Holyhead Town in 1925, Caernarvon Athletic in 1926 and Rhyl Athletic in 1927 before his eventual retirement.
