Description

Beamish, County Durham born left half Harry Sellars began his football career on the books of Darlington in 1921-22 without making their first team, and played non league football for Leadgate Park, from where he was signed by Second Division club Stoke in December 1923, his Football League debut coming the following month at Clapton Orient when he scored in a 2-0 victory. Indeed he scored 4 goals in his first four matches but was only a fringe participant until later in the season when Stoke were relegated during 1925-26, the season in which moved to the half back line, initially playing right half from November 1925 before switching to his more familiar left half berth from October 1927.

He became a regular in Stoke’s team from February 1926 and played 33 matches during their 1926-27 campaign when a strong half back line with Sellars, Cecil Eastwood and Tom Williamson helped Stoke Stoke immediately win the Third Division (North) Championship to return to the Second Division at the first time of asking. A near ever present in 1928-29 and 1929-30 missing only two matches a season, Sellars achieved ever present status in 1931-32 as Stoke finished third in the Second Division, narrowly missing out on promotion. The following season they won the Second Division Championship in 1932-33 with Sellars missing just three matches.

He had two further seasons as a first team regular in the top flight, before losing his place in September 1935 after suffering a knee injury and after 19 goals in 395 appearances for The Potters over thirteen seasons he joined Cheshire League Congleton Town in 1936, for whom he made 36 appearances before spending 1937-38 on the books of Port Vale, without making their first team.

After the Second World War Sellars returned to Stoke to become Bob McGrory’s assistant manager and first-team coach. In his role he helped to train his son John, although he.was also recruited to manage League of Ireland side Dundalk at the start of the 1947-48 but his spell as manager was brief and he agreed to a mutual termination of his contract in October 1947.

His son John also played for Stoke City in the late 1940’s and 1950’s. Together, father and son played 808 League and Cup matches for the club.
