Description

Glasgow born right half Bobby Ross began his football career with Glasgow Benburb in the mid 1930’s and impressed enough during his spell at Tinto Park to be signed by Scottish League behemoth Glasgow Rangers in 1937, for whom he made his Scottish League debut at Hibernian in August 1937. A fringe player at Ibrox, he featured in their Glasgow Cup semi final win over Celtic that season but didn’t get picked for the Final, and played his last match of 8 appearances for The Gers in a win over St Johnstone in August 1938 before a move to Ayr United.

His career was soon severely interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, but after the War he signed for Dumbarton in 1945 before heading south to join Third Division (South) club Watford in July 1946, for whom he made his Football League debut at Queen’s Park Rangers that August. Their regular penalty taker, Described as “conspicuous for his long throw-ins”, Ross scored 6 goals in 35 appearances for The Hornets, 5 of which were from the spot, but after a single season at Vicarage Road returned to Dumbarton in the summer of 1947, where he scored once in 26 appearances for his last known professional club.
