Scottish full back David Robson had played for Ayr in 1889 before joining Second Division Ardwick, soon to become Manchester City, making his Football League debut in their inaugural League fixture against Bootle in September 1892, in a season when he was Ardwick’s only ever present. After 42 appearances he joined First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 1894 but only made 5 appearances for Wolves before returning to Ardwick the same December. He then scored once in a further 51 appearances for Ardwick, in fact his goal was for the re-named Manchester City, scored against Leicester Fosse in April 1896 as City finished second in the League but missed out on promotion to the First Division in the Test Matches.

He joined Southern League Millwall Athletic in the 1896 close season, and continued to play for them until his retirement, having made 36 appearances for The Lions.
