Giltbrook, Nottinghamshire born inside forward Tom “Tex” Rickards started his football career with local junior club Giltbrook Villa in 1930 and played for Johnson & Barnes in 1931 before joining Second Division Notts County, making his Football League debut at Burnley in April 1933.
Initially a fringe player at Meadow Lane, he broke into the first eleven in September 1935 after The Magpies’ relegation earlier that summer, and was part of their side that finished runners up in the Third Division (South) in 1936-37 in the days when only the Champions were promoted.
In the summer of 1938 he joined Cardiff City after 27 goals in 124 appearances for County, and he scored 5 goals in 22 appearances for The Bluebirds before joining Midland League club Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in the summer of 1939, immediately before the outbreak of the Second World War.
During the War he guested for Leicester City, Mansfield Town, Chesterfield and Stockport County. After the conflict he joined Midland League club Peterborough United in 1946, and after leaving Peterborough in the summer of 1949 having scored 18 goals in 133 matches for Posh, Rickards played for March in the 1949-50 season and then moved to Worksop for the 1950-51 season before his eventual retirement.
NB although the photo was taken while at Notts County, it was published after his move to Cardiff City.
