Church, Lancashire born right back John Richardson began his football career with Great Harwood prior to the First World War, and after the War he played for Moscow Mill United Methodists in 1919 before joining local professional club Accrington Stanley. When Stanley joined the Third Division (North) in 1921, Richardson made his Football League debut at Stockport County in April 1922, and missed only one match during their 1923-24 campaign. He played a final season for Accrington in 1924-25 and re-joined Great Harwood, his last known club, in the summer of 1925 after 103 appearances for Stanley.
