Riccarton, Ayrshire born centre half Jack Reid began his football career with junior club Dunraven Star in 1913, playing for Bloomfield United and Castleview in 1914 before his first experience in senior football when he joined his elder brother Max at Irish League club Distillery in 1915, with whom he stayed until August 1921, when with his brother he signed for Lancashire Combination club New Brighton. When New Brighton joined The Football League in the summer of 1923, both brothers made their League debuts in New Brighton’s inaugural fixture, a 1-1 draw at Bradford Park Avenue that August.
Reid helped New Brighton finished third in the Third Division (North) in 1924-25 and was a regular for five seasons, however he lost his regular place in the first eleven in April 1928, and he returned to Irish League football with Ballymena in 1928 having scored 10 goals in 183 appearances for The Rakers, staying a season at Ballymena before joining Bangor in 1929.
In August 1930 he returned to New Brighton and made 7 further League appearances for them during the late summer and early autumn. He then re-joined Distillery before the year end where he later finished his playing career.
He was the younger brother of Max Reid, also a New Brighton player, with whom he played regularly for four seasons in League football, as well as previously having played together at Distillery.
NB one of the two brothers, and it isn’t certain as to which, twice represented The Irish League in November 1919, playing in a 2-0 defeat to The Scottish League at Windsor Park, Belfast, and two weeks later in a 2-2 draw with The Football League at Anfield.
