Description

Hucknall, Nottinghamshire born inside right George Reeves played for Sutton Athletic, Ripley Athletic in 1905 and Sutton Town in 1906 before joining Second Division club Barnsley in December 1906, making his Football League debut against Glossop on Christmas Day, scoring twice in a 3-0 victory. He was the club’s top scorer in both 1906-07 and 1907-08 with 13 and 14 goals respectively, the latter in only 12 matches that autumn included hat-tricks against Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers, before First Division stalwarts Aston Villa signed him in November 1907 for a very substantial £1,200 fee after 27 goals in 30 matches for The Tykes.

He made his Aston Villa debut against Newcastle United at Villa Park at the month end. He scored his first Villa goal against Notts County the following March staying two years with Villa but lost his place at the start of the 1909-10 season heralding a move to Bradford Park Avenue in November 1909 after 11 goals in 36 appearances. A goal on his debut in a win at Leeds City perhaps proved promise unfulfilled and his stay at Bradford saw 22 goals in 63 matches before he joined Blackpool in March 1913, but he only appeared 3 times for The Seasiders that spring before retiring from the professional game at the end of the season.
