Description

St Helens, Lancashire born full back Hubert Redwood began his football career with Shirdley Albion before joining Second Division Manchester United in 1935, making his Football League debut against Tottenham Hotspur that September, in what proved to be his only first team appearance of the season as United won the Second Division Championship. He broke into the Red Devils’ first team at the beginning of the 1936-37 season, playing 22 top flight matches, however United were relegated at the end of the season. They bounced back immediately, gaining promotion as Second Division runners up in 1937-38, with Redwood scoring two penalties in 33 appearances during the campaign.

Back in the First Division, Redwood made a further 40 appearances, scoring twice more, to bring his total appearances for United to 96, before the outbreak of The Second World War forced the abandonment of peacetime football in September 1939.

Redwood subsequently died on active service in 1943, succumbing to tuberculosis while serving in The South Lancashire Regiment.
