Joining the club in 1906, full back James Rattray spent four seasons at Motherwell. His defensive partner was McLean and in their debut season together the club finished in a tenth place position, Rattray making 28 appearances that campaign. The 1907-08 Season was more or less the same again as a tenth place League placing was secured and he made 32 appearances. 1908-09 saw the club slip further down the table, thus led to the management shuffling the defensive pack and Rattray soon found himself out of contention. He left Fir Park in 1910 having made 101 appearances without scoring.
