Glasgow born left half back and sometimes outside left Willie Rae began his senior football career with Glasgow Rangers during the Second World War making his debut against Motherwell in a Scottish Southern League wartime fixture in November 1945, one of a pair of wartime matches, and he made his Scottish League debut against Morton at Ibrox in November 1946 after the resumption of peacetime football. Clearly a brave player, in March 1948 he played on against Falkirk and finished the match despite having fractured his wrist.

Over eleven seasons at Ibrox he scored 7 goals in 179 appearances for Rangers and won tw0 Scottish League Championships in 1949 and 1950, The Scottish Cup in 1950 as they beat East Fife in front of 116,000 that April, and the Scottish League Cup in April 1947, as Rangers beat Aberdeen 4-0 in front of 83,000 before moving to Queen of the South in 1956. He played two seasons for The Doonhamers, making 14 appearances before his retirement in 1958.
