Ashington born full back George Prior joined Blyth Spartans after the end of World War One, before signing for Second Division Sheffield Wednesday for £300 in 1920, making his Football League debut at Birmingham that October. He made 37 appearances in 4 seasons at Hillsborough before joining Watford in August 1924 in exchange for George Toone and “a big sum”. He became popular during his 6 seasons at Watford, scoring 3 goals in 187 appearances at Vicarage Road before returning to the North East to join hometown club Ashington in 1930.
He had a younger brother, Jack, who enjoyed a good career with Sunderland, Grimsby Town and Mansfield Town, and a son, Ken, who played in the 1950’s for Newcastle United and Millwall.
