Stockton, County Durham born right back Robert Pringle began his senior football career with local First Division club Middlesbrough in 1921 and spent 1921-22 on their books without making their first eleven. He joined Second Division club Bradford City in 1922, making his Football League debut at Derby County that November, and played 31 matches for The Bantams before joining Third Division (North) club Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 1924.

Struggling to establish himself initially for The Railwaymen, probably through injury, he missed only 6 matches in four seasons between 1927-28 and 1930-31, being ever present in their 1928-29 campaign, and enjoyed ten seasons with Crewe Alexandra scoring 7 goals in 305 matches before retiring in the summer of 1934.
