He soon became a first team regular and was an ever present as they were promoted to Division One as Second Division runners up in 1923-24, then playing five seasons in the top flight for Bury before their relegation in 1929. He became a true stalwart of the club, staying 15 seasons at Gigg Lane and missed only 3 games in three seasons between 1930 and 1933, playing his last match in January 1936, by when he had made 421 appearances and had scored 8 goals for The Shakers.

During the Second World War he acted as Bury’s manager from March 1944 to June 1945. In June 1949 he became manager of Accrington Stanley staying in the role until March 1951.
