Annfield Plain, County Durham born outside right Ernie Porter began his football career with Ouston Rovers in the early 1920’s and played for Birtley in 1923, from where he joined Sheffield United in 1924, spending 1924-25 on the books at Bramall Lane without making a first team appearance. A move to Midland League club Boston Town in 1925 led to him being signed by Second Division club Reading in the summer of 1926, Porter making his Football League debut against Nottingham Forest that September, scoring 4 goals in 18 matches for The Royals during a single season at Elm Park.
Porter moved on to Third Division (South) club Norwich City in the summer of 1927, where he enjoyed four seasons as a first team regular, scoring 32 goals in 139 matches for The Canaries through to May 1931, after when he joined Kent League club Tunbridge Wells Rangers that summer, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
