Description

Glasgow born outside right Ernie Pinkney began his football career with Baptist’s United and Hartlepool and District League club Christ Church, then playing for West Hartlepool in 1908, scoring 15 goals in his first season and a further 12 in his second season, from where he was signed by First Division club Everton in February 1910, making his Football League debut against Bury the next month, playing 4 times for The Toffees before the end of the season. A noted sprinter, he scored his only goal for Everton in his final appearance in a win at Preston North End in January 1911, having played 4 further matches that season, but after a further season in the reserves he was released and joined Combination club Barrow in 1912, moving to Southern League club Gillingham in 1913, where he played 63 matchs and scored 13 goals before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915.

Pinkney was a wartime guest for Liverpool between 1915 and 1917, scoring 3 goals in 28 matches for The Reds and during the War he served in The Royal Engineers (as a Sapper) rising to the rank of Corporal. After the War he had a spell at Tranmere Rovers in 1919 thus becoming one of the few players to play for the three Merseyside teams – Everton, Liverpool and Tranmere Rovers – before a return to Football League action when he joined Third Division (North) club Halifax Town in July 1921, scoring twice in 30 matches for The Shaymen during a single season. He then joined Accrington Stanley where he scored 3 goals in 14 matches across their 1922-23 campaign before retiring from professional football.
