Newcastle born inside forward John Pickering began his football career with Willington Athletic in 1903 before joining First Division Bury, for whom he made his Football League debut at Derby County in October 1904. He made 5 appearances within a 4 week spell but that proved the extent of his opportunities with The Shakers, and in the 1905 close season he moved on to Southern League Luton Town. After two seasons with The Hatters, he joined New Brompton (now Gillingham) in 1907, and returned to Bury in 1908 after a single season at Priestfield. However he didn’t add to his previous total of appearances during his second spell at Gigg Lane.
