Birmingham born centre half Ernest Phillips joined Redditch Town in 1921 and from there was signed by Third Division (North) Tranmere Rovers the following year, with Phillips making his Football League debut against Stalybridge Celtic in August 1922. Two weeks later he scored his only goal in a 4-1 win over Accrington Stanley at Prenton Park, and during 1922-23 he managed 20 appearances, before joining non league Wallasey Town during the summer of 1923.
