Wednesbury, Staffordshire born centre half Ernie Perry started his senior football career after the end of the First World War at Second Division club Port Vale, where he made his Football League debut at South Shields in October 1919. Establishing himself as Vale’s regular pivot, he scored twice for Vale in 46 appearances over the first two post war peacetime seasons before transferring to Crewe Alexandra in 1921, He made his debut for The Alex at Darlington on Christmas Eve, and made 23 appearances during Crewe’s inaugural Football League season and a further 41 appearances for The Alex over their next two campaigns before being released by Crewe in the summer of 1924. The rest of his career is uncertain.
