Dundee born centre forward Jock Paterson had played in local Dundee football prior to World War One and had been injured while serving with The Black Watch during the conflict before joining Dundee in 1919, where he made his Scottish League debut, and only appearance for The Dees, in a win over Heart of Midlothian that September. He moved to Second Division Leicester Fosse later that year making his Football League debut against Stoke in December 1919, scoring in a 3-1 victory. Indeed he scored in 6 of his first 7 games for Leicester and bagged a hat-trick against Lincoln City in March, indeed he made such an impression that he was capped by Scotland against England in April 1920 in a 5-4 defeat at Hillsborough, which would prove his only international appearance.

He top scored for Leicester with 17 goals in 1920-21, and was then signed by First Division Sunderland in February 1922 after 37 goals in 89 games for The Foxes, scoring a hat-trick against Bolton Wanderers that April. He played 2 and a half years for Sunderland, scoring 40 goals in 76 games including 24 in 1922-23 as Sunderland finished League runners-up, but in October 1924 he was transferred to Preston, for whom he scored only once in 19 games and could prevent them being relegated at the end of the season. A spell at non league Mid-Rhondda United in 1925 prefaced a return to Football League action with Queen’s Park Rangers in early 1926, and he scored 6 times in 36 games before joining non league Wellesley Juniors in 1927, moving to Mansfield Town in 1928 and the same year back to Scotland where he played for Airdrieonians and Montrose.
