Description

Hardgate, Dunbartonshire born left back Bobby Orr began his football career with Clydebank Juniors and joined Scottish League club Third Lanark in 1909. He spent the next fifteen years at Caithkin Park, playing for Thirds both sides of the First World War, although the closest he came to winning a trophy for The Warriors in this time was reaching two finals of the Glasgow Merchants’ Charity Cup in 1910, lost on a tally of corners following a draw, and 1914, a 6-0 defeat to Celtic. He scored 31 goals in 392 appearances for Third Lanark during his time at the club.

He played for Scotland in an unofficial Victory International against Ireland in March 1919, a match which Scotland won 2-1 at Ibrox Park. He also appeared twice for The Scottish League, first playing in February 1919 against The Football League in a 3-1 defeat at St Andrew’s, and winning his second cap in March 1922 in a 3-0 defeat to The Football League at Ibrox. He also toured North America in 1921 with ‘Scotland’, in reality, Third Lanark with a number of capable guest players.

In 1924 he joined Greenock Morton, scoring 6 goals in 68 appearances over two seasons at Cappielow, before venturing south to join Third Division (South) club Crystal Palace in the 1926 close season, making his Football League debut against Queen’s Park Rangers that August. A regular for Palace over his two seasons at Selhurst Park as they finished in the top six in the division both seasons, he scored twice in 71 appearances for The Eagles before returning to Scotland to join Dumbarton in 1928. He scored 3 goals in 33 appearances for The Sons in 1928-29, before returning to Clydebank some twenty years after leaving, where he finished his career in 1930 having made 22 first team appearances.
