Aston, Birmingham born right half Fred Norris began his football career at Birmingham Victorian League side Adelaide, later joining Halesowen Town.in 1923. Norris signed for First Division club Aston Villa in February 1926. Initially an inside right, he made his Football League debut at Arsenal that April. In his second match he scored twice in a 3-0 win over Liverpool, his only goals in 9 matches for Aston Villa. In 1928, Norris signed for West Ham United where he converted to the half back line, but he never played more than half of The Hammers’ matches during five seasons at Upton Park, where he scored 6 goals in 65 matches.
He signed for Third Division (South) club Crystal Palace in the summer of 1933, where he played a single season, mainly at inside right, scoring 4 goals in a dozen matches through to January 1934. He then joined a long list of Football League players who crossed the Channel to play in the French League in the mid 1930’s, and didn’t return to play football in England.
NB although published after his move to West Ham United, Norris is in an Aston Villa shirt in the photograph.
