Description
Staveley born wing half George Needham started in local football with Staveley Town in 1918 after serving in the Army with The Sherwood Foresters, and joined First Division Derby County in 1919 making his Football League debut that December against West Bromwich Albion, however he only played five times for the first team before being released in July 1920 and joining newly elected Third Division club Gillingham.
Although he didn’t play in their opening fixture he played 36 League games in their inaugural Football League campaign, and scored 15 goals in 131 games over the next 4 seasons at Priestfield, until he moved to Northampton Town in February 1924. He scored once in 36 games for The Cobblers before moving to non league Worksop Town in the summer of 1925.
His uncle was Ernest “Nudger” Needham of Sheffield United and England.
