Hovingham, Yorkshire born outside left Lionel Murphy started his football career with Melton Mowbray prior to the First World War, joining Second Division club Derby County in 1921 and making his Football League debut against Clapton Orient in February 1922. He was part of Derby’s 1923 FA Cup semi final team that lost to West Ham United at Stamford Bridge, and scored 12 goals as Derby won promotion to the First Division in 1925-26, finishing runners up in the Second Division.
He moved to Bolton Wanderers in January 1928 after 49 goals in 235 appearances for The Rams, and scored 8 goals in 34 appearances for The Trotters over a season and a half, but didn’t feature in their 1929 FA Cup Final winning team. He moved to Midland League club Mansfield Town later in 1929 but returned to Football League action with Norwich City in 1931, playing four seasons in East Anglia, scoring 25 goals in 132 appearances, before a season with Luton Town in 1934-35 where he failed to make The Hatters’ first eleven. He retired from professional football thereafter.
