Gartcosh, Lanarkshire born outside left Frank Murphy began his football career with Croy Celtic from where he signed for Scottish League club Glasgow Celtic in April 1932, turning professional in May 1933 and spent time on loan at St Roch’s in 1933-34. He made his Scottish League debut, scoring twice at Airdrieonians in April 1934, and was part of Celtic’s teams that won The Scottish League Championship in 1936 and 1938, as well as The Scottish Cup when they beat Aberdeen 2-1 in front of 147,000 spectators at Hampden Park in April 1937. He also played as won the Empire Exhibition Trophy in June 1938 when Celtic beat Everton 1-0 after extra time in the Final at Ibrox Park in front of 82,000 spectators.
Murphy was selected for The Scottish League XI and scored in a 5-2 victory over The Irish League at Ibrox in September 1936 and was capped for Scotland when he played and scored in a 3-1 victory over The Netherlands in Amsterdam in May 1938.
Murphy’s career was then severely interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, by when he had scored 50 goals in 161 matches for Celtic, and he continued to play for Celtic during the War until June 1942, also playing for Albion Rovers, Tranmere Rovers and Aldershot during the Second World War as a wartime guest, but after the War his Celtic contract was terminated in 1945 without playing again for Celtic post war.
