Description

St Ninians, Stirlingshire born goalkeeper Robert Muir began his football career with Rutherglen Glencairn and had trials with Glasgow Celtic and Hamilton Academical in 1933 before joining First Division club Portsmouth in 1934, where he was understudy to Jock Gilfillan, making his Football League debut, and only appearance for Pompey, against Liverpool in January 1935. He returned to Scotland the same year to join Third Lanark, where he was a near ever-present for The Hi-Hi in the seasons which followeds before joining Third Division (North) club Rochdale in the summer of 1939. However before he had played for the Rochdale first eleven the Second World War broke out, effectively ending his football career. During the War he played for King’s Park (now Stirling Albion) in 1939-40, for Partick Thistle in 1941-42, and also played for St Mirren and East Fife but by the end of the War he had retired from professional football.
