Description

Llanddulas, Conwy born inside forward Billy Morris played for Llandudno Town in 1938 before joining Second Division Burnley in January 1939, making his Football League debut against Norwich City the same month, playing 12 times before the Second World War forced the abandonment of peacetime football. After the War he returned to Turf Moor and played in their 1946 FA Cup campaign, before being a vital member of Burnley’s 1946-47 team that both finished runners up (on the final day) in the League Championship to Liverpool, and lost in the FA Cup Final when they were beaten 1-0 by Charlton Athletic at Wembley.
Morris won 5 caps for Wales, playing his first match in a 2-1 defeat to Ireland at Windsor Park Belfast in April 1947, winning his second cap in November the following year in a 1-0 defeat to England at Villa Park. He was then recalled playing 3 times for Wales between November 1951 and March 1952, his final cap coming against Ireland at The Vetch Field in a 3-0 win.
Morris continued to play a further 6 seasons for The Clarets, making his final appearance in December 1952 having scored 53 goals in 230 appearances. After he retired from playing, Morris had two spells as manager of Wrexham, managing the team for the 1960-61 season and again more briefly from March till October 1965.
His nephew is former Wrexham and Chester City forward Elfed Morris
