Burghead, Moray born outside left Malcolm McPhail began his football career with Arthurlie during the First World War and scored 5 goals in 8 Scottish League matches for The ‘Lie during 1915 before joining top flight club Kilmarnock, making his debut for Killie that December at home to Third Lanark, scoring his first goal against Hamilton Academical in January 1916.
During the War he played for The Scottish League Xl against The Army in May 1917 and also played for Scotland in an unofficial Victory international against Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast in April 1919.
A regular in the team through to 1923, he played for Kilmarnock as they won The Scottish Cup in 1920 beating Albion Rovers 3-2 in front of 95,000 spectators at Hampden Park. He scored 57 goals in 257 matches for Killie, making his final appearance in February 1924 against Morton.
He subsequently joined Morton later the same year and had two seasons at Capielow, scoring 3 goals in 46 matches for The Tom before his retirement.
McPhail later served as a director of St Mirren.
He was the older brother of Airdrieonians, Rangers and Scotland forward Bob McPhail.
