Description

Broughty Ferry, Dundee born inside forward Gibby McNaughton joined local junior club Dundee Violet in 1932 before his first foray into Scottish League football with Clyde in 1933. He returned to his home town, signing with Dundee in 1934 where he scored 15 goals in 49 matches before joining Dunfermline Athletic in 1935 and East Fife early in 1936. In the 1936 close season he moved south to join Second Division Nottingham Forest, making his Football League debut against West Ham United that October.

He became a regular but not automatic inclusion in Forest’s eleven over the next three seasons, scoring 13 goals in 70 appearances before joining local rivals Notts County in the summer of 1939. However the advent of the Second World War finished his professional career before he had played a first team match for The Magpies, although he stayed in the East Midlands and after the War joined non league Ilkeston Town in 1945 where he made 74 appearances for the club and scored 22 goals. During the 1949-50 season, he had a spell as player-manager of Ilkeston before leaving in the summer of 1950.
