Description

Glasgow born inside forward Harry McMenemy was the son of Celtic’s Jimmy McMenemy, and began his football career with Strathclyde in 1930. Signing for First Division Newcastle United in July 1931, he made his Football League debut at Grimsby Town that September, and soon established himself as a regular in their team. In his first season, Newcastle went all the way to the FA Cup Final where they beat Arsenal 2-1 with a controversial goal in  in what became known as the “Over The Line” Final.

He received one international call-up to the Scotland squad in October 1933 for a match against Wales but pulled out due to injury, and was replaced by his brother John. In total he had 6 seasons at St James’ Park, scoring 37 goals in 149 appearances, but in 1937 he returned to Scotland joining Dundee. He later returned to the north east to join Gateshead in 1939 but never played for the club before The Second World War led to the abandonment of peacetime football.

His brother John played for Celtic, Motherwell and Scotland.

He is pictured here with Newcastle centre forward Billy Cairns.
