Signed by Hibernian from junior club Winchburgh Albion, inside right James McLean made his Scottish League debut against Aberdeen in August 1936, scoring 8 goals in 29 matches during Hibernian’s 1936-37 campaign. He was more a fringe player for the next two seasons and scored 16 goals in 62 appearances for Hibernian before the Second World War robbed him, like many others, of arguably his best footballing years and he played one wartime match for Hibernian at Third Lanark in December 1942. After the War he played for Airdrieonians in 1946-47, Stirling Albion from 1947 to 1949 where he was club captain, and Alloa Athletic from 1949 to 1950 before retiring from playing.
