Description

Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway born right half back Steve McLachlan began his football career with Dalbeattie Star from where he signed by manager George Jobey for First Division club Derby County in March 1938, making his Football League debut at Preston North End in March 1939, his only first team appearance before the outbreak of the Second World War that September. During the War, McLachlan served with The Durham Light Infantry unit, latterly as a sergeant and won a Distinguished Service Medal.

After the War he returned to The Baseball Ground but spent the first five peacetime seasons as a fringe player making just 21 appearances until he came into the side on a regular basis in October 1951, making 28 appearances during 1951-52. By the time he transferred to Kilmarnock in June 1953 for a small fee, he had scored twice in 63 matches for The Rams, and he ended his career in Scotland. He was released by Kilmarnock in May 1955, after scoring once in 28 matches over two seasons, his last being in September 1954, already aged 36.
