Hebburn, Northumberland born outside left Jack McKay began his football career with hometown club Hebburn Argyle and from there was signed by Second Division club Birmingham in the summer of 1910, scoring the only goal of the game on his Football League debut in a victory over Gainsborough Trinity that September. He scored once more that season in a 2-0 win over Blackpool at the start of April 1911, making 17 appearances for Birmingham in his debut season. However he managed only 4 more first team outings in September 1911 before leaving the St Andrews club to return to north east football the next year when he signed for Northern Alliance club Blyth Spartans, helping them to win the Northern Alliance Championship in 1912-13.
