Description

Glasgow born right half Johnny McIntyre began his football career prior to the First World War with Glasgow Perthshire in 1914, and towards the end of the conflict joined Stenhousemuir in 1918. In the 1921 close season he was signed by Second Division Derby County, and he made his Football League debut at Blackpool the same August, immediately establishing himself as a first team regular.

He would become a stalwart for Derby over the next ten seasons. He played in Derby’s 1923 FA Cup semi final defeat to West Ham United at Stamford Bridge, and after Derby twice finished in 3rd place in the Second Division in 1924 and 1925, in the latter season McIntyre being ever present, he missed only 4 games as they won promotion to the First Division in 1925-26 as Second Division runners up.

He continued to feature in Derby’s increasingly strong First Division line-up, being a mainstay of the teams that finished 4th in 1928 and runners up in the League Championship in 1930, until losing his place in September 1931, and after 9 goals in 369 appearances for The Rams he joined Second Division club Chesterfield in December that year. He stayed two seasons at Chesterfield, but after their 1933 relegation, having made 62 appearances for The Spireites, he joined non league Derby Co-op Welfare in the summer of 1933, retiring from the professional game.
