Description

Dumfries born centre forward Jimmy McIntosh began his football career with Droylesden from where he signed for Second Division club Blackpool in September 1935, making his Football League debut at Swansea Town that September. However he had played only 5 matches for The Seasiders when he was signed by Preston North End in November 1937. He was part of a deal that brought Frank O’Donnell to the club, with Dickie Watmough joining McIntosh on his way to Deepdale, although he only played 4 matches for Preston that season and was not involved as they won the FA Cup. He found a regular place in The Lambs’ line up from December 1938 but his career was severely interrupted with the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 by when he had scored 3 goals in 27 matches for Preston.

After the War he returned to Deepdale in 1945 and scored twice in 6 further matches for Preston North End in the 1946 FA Cup before re-joining Blackpool in May 1946, and he was a regular over the next three seasons scoring 5 goals as they reached the 1948 FA Cup Final although McIntosh missed the 4-2 Cup Final defeat (after being ahead 2-1 at half time) against Manchester United. The following Monday the two sides played each other again, this time in a rearranged League fixture. Blackpool recalled McIntosh and won 1–0 courtesy of a Stan Mortensen goal. The following Saturday, on League business, McIntosh scored five goals in a 7-0 whitewash of his former club Preston at Deepdale in the final game of the season, becoming the first Blackpool player to score five goals in a match.

McIntosh joined Everton in March 1949 after 30 goals in 74 matches in his second spell with The Seasiders, and he played for Everton until the end of the 1950-51 season, scoring 19 goals in 59 matches for The Toffees before joining Belfast based Distillery as player-manager in 1952. He led Distillery to the Final of the Ulster Cup scoring eight goals in the competition before they were beat 3-0 in the Final by Glentoran. McIntosh was installed as manager of Glentoran in 1955, his first game in charge of The Glens an Irish League match on 16th April 1955 against Portadown, winning 4-2, he then followed this up with a 6-1 win over Derry City. He stayed until 1957 when he became manager of Scottish League club Greenock Morton, staying at Cappielow until 1960. He then became manager of Berwick Rangers and held that position until 1963 when he retired from professional football.
