Broughton, Salford born centre half John McGillivray began his football career with Berry’s Association in 1906, joining Manchester United in 1907. He made his Manchester United debut in an FA Cup tie against Blackpool in January 1908, making one further appearance, his League debut, a week later in a 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United.
The following season he only made two further appearances, both matches at Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday ending in 2-0 defeats, before he joined Southport Central in 1909. In 1911 he joined Stoke, by now a non league club, and he finished his career by joining Dartford in 1912.
