Description

Cathcart, Renfrewshire born outside right James McCree was an amateur footballer who was on the books at Queen’s Park immediately after the First World War, without making a first team appearance. He played for Isthmian League club London Caledonians throughout much of the 1920’s and helped them win the FA Amateur Cup in 1923, in which they defeated Evesham Town 2-1 after extra time at The Crystal Palace, as well as the Isthmian League Championship in 1924-25.

In early 1925 he had a spell at Third Division (South) club Brentford and made his Football League debut in a defeat at Bristol City that January, playing twice more for Brentford through to March. He spent 1925-26 on the books of Second Division club Fulham and made two appearances for The Cottagers in August 1925, playing in their opening two League fixtures. In 1926-27 he was on Watford’s books and 1927-28 he was on Middlesbrough’s books but he didn’t feature for either club’s first elevens. He continued to play for London Caledonians meantime, and won his only international cap when he played for Scotland Amateurs in a 1-0 win against England Amateurs at Hampden Park on 14th March 1930. He also represented Civil Service in amateur football.
