Description

Rotherham, Yorkshire born right winger Jimmy McCormick played junior football for Rotherham YMCA in 1929 before joining hometown Third Division club Rotherham United in March 1931, making his Football League debut against Crewe Alexandra that May. Having scored twice in 19 appearances he joined Midland League Scarborough later in 1931 before signing for Chesterfield in May 1932. He scored twice in 15 appearances for The Spireites before being transferred to Tottenham Hotspur in March 1933, helping Spurs secure promotion to the First Division at the end of the season.

Described in 1935 as “a very tricky and fast winger… slightly built, very quick and difficult to hold in a sudden attack, he is a great asset to his team”, he eventually lost his regular place in the Spurs team in 1937 but continued at the club until the outbreak of the Second World War, by when he had scored 28 goals in 151 appearances, and after the conflict he joined Fulham in April 1946, where he scored twice in 10 appearances.

He had two seasons at Lincoln City, joining them in August 1947, winning the Third Division (North) Championship with them in 1947-48, and scoring 6 goals in 67 appearances, before returning to London to join Crystal Palace in February 1949, where he scored twice in 13 appearances before finishing his playing career in Malta with Sliema Wanderers later in 1949. After a spell managing in Turkish football he returned to England and became manager of York City between June 1953 and September 1954.
