Description

Cambusnethan, Wishaw, Lanarkshire born left half John McConnell began his football career with Motherwell Hearts  and played for Glasgow Ashfield in 1905 before joining Scottish League club Motherwell in 1906, for whom he scored twice in 34 appearances over two seasons before joining Airdrieonians in 1908. After a season at Broomfield Park he was signed by First Division club Liverpool for £80 in April 1909, making his Football League debut at Aston Villa the same December. He made 13 further appearances that season as Liverpool finished runners-up to League Champions Aston Villa. He made a further 31 appearances in 1910-11 and played another eight matches in what turned out to be his third and final season at Anfield, 1911-12, scoring his only goal for The Reds in a 2-2 draw at Woolwich Arsenal in September 1911.

In May 1912, having made 53 appearances for Liverpool, he moved back to Scotland joining Aberdeen, making his debut that September in a win over Hamilton Academical, and he made 20 appearances for The Dons during 1912-13 before finishing with professional football.
