Bothwell, Lanarkshire born winger Jimmy McCombe played junior football with Bothwellhaugh A in 1931, Wishaw Thistle in 1932 and Wishaw Juniors in 1933 before joining Heart of Midlothian in 1934, where he didn’t make The Jambos’ first team. He joined Clyde in 1935 where he made his bow in Scottish League football, before joining King’s Park, the fore-runner of Stirling Albion, later the same year. A move to England followed in the 1936 close season when he joined Third Division (South) Clapton Orient, making his Football League debut against Crystal Palace the same August, scoring in a 1-1 draw. He scored 8 goals in 50 appearances over the next 2 seasons before joining non league Chelmsford City in 1938, subsequently playing for Dartford in 1939 before the Second World War.
