Probably born in Edinburgh, right back Bob McCartney played Scottish League football for Leith Athletic having signed for them in July 1890 before joining Heart of Midlothian in June 1895, making his Hearts debut at St Mirren that August. He played once for The Scottish League against The Irish League in a 5-0 victory at Carolina in January 1898. His last appearance of 65 for Hearts in Scottish League and Cup came against Kilmarnock in September 1899. He then returned to Leith Athletic in December 1899 where he played out his career.
